Armenian investigators have announced an arrest in the ongoing investigation into the deadly post-election unrest of 2008.
Investigators said on Wednesday that a former senior police official has been arrested for allegedly ordering officers to beat a protester on March 1, 2008.
The official, identified only by the initials H.T., served as the first deputy chief of the General Department of Criminal Intelligence of the police in 2008, according to the Investigative Committee.
He allegedly ordered his subordinate officers to beat a protester, identified by the initials E.A., and take him to a police station, where he was reportedly severely battered by the officers.
The former official has been indicted on criminal charges related to abuse of power, specifically for inciting his subordinates to commit abuse of power.
He was arrested on February 25 and is awaiting his initial court appearance and bail hearing.
The criminal investigation into the 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan is still ongoing. At the time, ex-President Levon Ter-Petrosyan was rallying with his supporters in Yerevan against what he described as rigged elections that declared Serzh Sargsyan president-elect and successor to Robert Kocharyan. Ten people, including two police officers, were killed during mass disturbances and clashes between demonstrators and security forces on March 1, 2008.
