Rights of foreign nationals and asylum seekers addressed at Abovyan Penitentiary

Representatives of the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia visited the “Abovyan” Penitentiary with the participation of representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Migration and Citizenship Service, and the Chamber of Advocates.
The Human Rights Defender’s Office said in a press release that, as part of the visit, the delegation members met with the penitentiary institution’s administration. Issues related to ensuring the rights of incarcerated foreign nationals were discussed.
Particular attention was paid to ensuring the rights of asylum seekers among the inmates.
The Human Rights Defender’s Office emphasized that ensuring human rights in places of deprivation of liberty is always under the Ombudsperson’s direct attention.
