The Hayrenik (Fatherland) party, led by former National Security Service Director Major General Arthur Vanetsyan, announced on Friday that it will not run for parliament in this year’s election scheduled for June 7.
The party said in a press release that the decision was made at its Board meeting on February 26 following discussions on Armenia’s domestic political situation, existing internal and external challenges, and developments characteristic of the pre-election period.
Among the reasons cited for not participating in the elections is the “continued polarization of the political field, without a genuinely unifying state ideology and a clear system of values at its core.”
“The ideological foundations, priorities, and strategic vision for Armenia’s future of the Fatherland Party differ from the approaches of other political forces active in the field, making the formation of an alliance unrealistic. An increase in the number of opposition forces participating in the elections could lead to a fragmentation of voters’ ballots and an inefficient allocation of political resources, which, under the above circumstances, could negatively affect the outcomes of the upcoming electoral process,” the party stated, urging its members, supporters, and allies to cast their votes for any “genuine opposition force” in the upcoming parliamentary elections according to their own preference.
