Azerbaijan expects to sign the initialed peace agreement with Armenia in 2026, a senior official from the Azerbaijani presidential administration has said.
“This is a historic year. The 30-year conflict has finally ended, and we are close to formalizing peace,” the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti quoted Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments, as saying at a press briefing in Geneva.
“The August summit in Washington made it possible to confirm the intention of both sides to remain committed to the peace agreement, as well as the shared desire of all countries to turn the page and begin a new chapter of regional development. We have finalized the peace agreement. Next year is also important; we hope to formalize the peace agreement with Armenia,” he added, according to RIA Novosti.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking at the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vienna, said that Armenia and Azerbaijan are currently in the most peaceful and stable period of their bilateral relations.
Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed a peace agreement during a U.S.-brokered summit in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 2025.
Armenia has expressed its readiness to formalize the peace treaty as soon as possible.
Earlier in October, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan lauded the newly established peace and highlighted by far the longest peaceful period in the country's history.
