Yerevan plans subway rolling stock upgrade

Preparations for the construction of Yerevan’s new “Ajapnyak” Metro station are underway, and city officials are simultaneously discussing plans to acquire new rolling stock and modernize the metro depot.

During a March 2 executive meeting at Yerevan City Hall, Mayor Tigran Avinyan inquired about the progress of plans to purchase 48 new metro cars and upgrade the depot.

The mayor’s adviser, Aneta Babayan, reported that the Ajapnyak station project and the broader metro modernization program—including a full renewal of the city’s rolling stock—are being implemented in parallel. She added:

“The projects have received approval in principle, and with a positive assessment, the proposals are being submitted to the Cabinet today so that a Public Investment Committee session can be scheduled for the final discussion of both programs.”

Babayan also noted that the revised budget for Yerevan Metro’s modernization program is estimated at around 60 billion Armenian drams (approximately $159 million), covering the depot upgrade and other infrastructure investments.
