The French National Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for the release of Armenian captives who are being held unlawfully in Azerbaijan.
Member of Parliament Laurent Wauquiez, a co-author of the resolution, presented it for adoption on behalf of the France-Armenia Friendship Group of the National Assembly, which he chairs.
In a post on X, he said he was “delighted” by the adoption of the resolution.
“France has a duty to act when others remain silent. We defend the right of a Christian people to survive in a region where they are a minority,” he wrote.
The remaining 19 Armenian captives and detainees held unlawfully in Azerbaijan include former political and military leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh, such as former presidents Arayik Harutyunyan, Bako Sahakyan, and Arkady Ghukasyan; former Foreign Minister Davit Babayan; former Defense Minister Levon Mnatsakanyan; and former State Minister Ruben Vardanyan.
The resolution passed with 183 votes in favor and none against.
