National Assembly adopts statement on establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia has adopted the draft statement “On the Establishment of Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan” authored by the “Civil Contract” faction.

The statement was adopted with 64 votes in favour, 0 against, and 2 abstentions, the Parliament's press service said in a readout.

The Head of the Civil Contract Faction Hayk Konjoryan noted that the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan was pre-signed in Washington on August 8 of this year, the declaration of peace was signed, and, in essence, peace has been established between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “The Civil Contract Faction thinks that the National Assembly should officially record this fact and, by the adoption of the statement, support the established peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and call on all interested parties to strengthen and develop the established peace,'' he said.

National Assembly deputies gave speeches on the issue. It was emphasized that the good neighbourly relations with neighbours and open borders will further strengthen the Armenian democracy, economy and legal systems. It was noted that the documents signed in Washington open a new page for sustainable development and security.

Hayk Konjoryan noted in his speech that one of the next steps to strengthen the established peace took place today in Copenhagen during the 7th Meeting of the European Political Community, where ten Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan met. According to him, once again, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan, as a result of the meeting, have recorded that that there is only one project in the context of unblocking infrastructure in the territory of Armenia: the TRIPP project.

The National Assembly Vice President Hakob Arshakyan stated that the peace process will also lead the establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. “What is this, if not the path to a viable state, what is this, if not the path to a dialogue-based, peaceful, free and independent state that provides the highest guarantees of security to its citizens?”he noted.
