Yerevan’s urban development projects are being implemented based on the adopted master plan and relevant zoning plans, while the possibility of construction is ultimately assessed by the Architectural Council, Mayor Tigran Avinyan said.
Speaking at a press briefing, Avinyan addressed ongoing urban development projects in the city.
Asked whether urban development projects in Yerevan are being implemented based on a strategic plan or whether developers themselves decide, for example, how many stories a building can have in a particular area, the mayor responded:
“No, the developer does not have such an opportunity. They may have such a desire, but we have an adopted master plan.”
The mayor emphasized that the city authority has an Architectural Council consisting of five specialists and architects, each of whom is replaced by a new architect every six months, so that the views of the broader architectural community can be represented on the council.
“Essentially, our council gives the final conclusion on what type of construction is possible in a particular area. We have established certain new, stricter rules regarding new complex construction projects.
We have reduced the land areas that are subject to development and have established many new restrictions of this kind,” Avinyan said.
