The government and authorities of the Republic of Armenia have made it clear that they will not take any action that does not serve the interests of both Armenia and Iran, Mehdi Sobhani, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia, said at a press conference touching upon the Washington Declaration.

According to the ambassador, part of the process in Washington involved the initialing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “We have always supported and welcomed a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Now we also support and welcome the signing of this document,” Sobhani said.

He noted that the statement signed by the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan enshrines five principles: national sovereignty, territorial integrity, jurisdiction, reciprocity and inviolability of borders. “These are the principles we have always supported. Of course, there were some unclear moments, but during bilateral meetings with Armenian authorities, I can say these issues have been resolved,” the ambassador added.

Sobhani emphasized that the Iranian side remains in close contact with Armenian authorities to stay informed about developments. He also highlighted that there is a general understanding between the two countries.
