Iranian Ambassador stresses importance of unblocking regional transport routes on principle of reciprocity

Iran has always welcomed and supported the Crossroads of Peace project, under which all countries in the region can use transport routes, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani said at a press conference.

According to him, Azerbaijan can establish contact with Nakhchivan and Armenia, in turn, can establish communication with Iran via Yeraskh and Julfa.

He noted that the response to the Crossroads of Peace project is also clearly reflected in the statement signed in Washington on August 8.

One of its five principles concerns reciprocity. “If Azerbaijan can establish a connection with Nakhchivan, then Armenia should have the opportunity to establish a connection with Iran through Yeraskh and Julfa,” the ambassador said.

Sobhani emphasized that if Azerbaijani citizens can reach Azerbaijan by land via Armenia, then Armenian citizens should likewise be able to communicate with Iran via Nakhchivan.

“If all countries can use these transportation opportunities, it will be in everyone’s interest. If it is in everyone’s interest, I think no one will be against it. I think it is a positive approach,” the Iranian ambassador concluded.
