Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan, a senior member of the ruling Civil Contract Party led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, told reporters on Friday that he is confident his party will receive more votes next year than it did in the 2021 election.
In 2021, Civil Contract received 54% of the vote and won 71 seats — a majority in the 107-seat parliament. The opposition Armenia Alliance finished second with 29 seats (21%), while the I Have Honor Alliance secured 7 seats.
Simonyan was asked whether he believes Civil Contract will be able to secure a majority of votes in the upcoming election. “If I used to think in the past that we would definitely get 51%, now I am sure of it. Especially after the August 8 Washington agreement, and considering the steps that have been taken — and will be taken — before the election, we will garner far more votes than we did in the 2021 election,” Simonyan told reporters.
