ICMP proposes independent DNA comparison mechanism between Armenia, Azerbaijan

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) proposes instituting an independent DNA comparison mechanism as a collaboration between Armenia and Azerbaijan to enhance the transparency, legitimacy and acceptance of DNA testing results in search of missing persons.

The proposal is made in the relevant country reports of the ICMP.

The ICMP recently held a presentation of its assessment report on Azerbaijan, APA news agency reported.

During the event it was noted that both Armenia and Azerbaijan currently have missing persons from the First and Second Karabakh wars, and unknown remains extracted from the war-affected areas may belong to both sides. Therefore, the creation of an independent mechanism for DNA comparison could be one of the few effective ways to confirm identifications and submit the results to the families.

During the event, Azeri officials falsely accused Armenia of refusing to cooperate in determining the fate of the missing persons.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in his recent interview, said that Armenia continues to be focused on the issue of determining the fate of the missing persons.
