YEREVAN, DECEMBER 7, ARMENPRESS. 36 years ago, a magnitude 6,8 earthquake hit Armenia, killing over 25,000 people.

The quake encompassed 40% of the territory of the country. The epicenter was in Lori province, the country’s northern part.

With an MSK intensity of X (devastating), the quake, which is now known as the Spitak earthquake, killed up to 17,000 people in Gyumri and 4,000 people in Spitak alone. Multiple towns and villages were either destroyed or heavily affected. Over 20,000 people sustained injuries. More than 500,000 people became homeless.

17% of the entire housing stock of the country was destroyed. More than 100 industrial enterprises ceased operations, and the economy suffered a severe blow.

Armenia, which was then part of the Soviet Union, received aid from over 113 countries and 7 international organizations. Over 40,000 experts and servicemen from across the Soviet Union were working in the disaster zone.

Armenians around the world also started helping the country’s relief efforts.

French recording artists and actors collaborated with Charles Aznavour to record the 1989 song "Pour toi Arménie.” Aznavour launched the "Aznavour for Armenia" foundation and composed the song to direct proceeds for relief efforts.

Rock Aid Armenia, aka Live Aid Armenia, was a humanitarian effort by the British music industry to raise money for relief efforts.
