The Constitution of Armenia is not an obstacle to signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, and the Armenian side is ready to sign it tomorrow, Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan stated during a briefing, responding to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks in an interview with France 24 that a peace treaty would not be signed until Armenia’s Constitution is “amended.”
“We believe that our Constitution is not an obstacle to signing a peace treaty, and we are ready to sign the peace treaty tomorrow. There is nothing new in our statement, in our approach, or in our position. We continue to believe that we can sign a peace treaty even in this situation, because our Constitutional Court has given a clear assessment that it does not contradict the Constitution,” Papoyan emphasized.
According to the minister, Armenia’s stance remains unchanged, and the negotiation process continues.“We see that there is a process, and that process is progressing at a fairly good pace. It is also a fact that peace has been established. It is also a fact that soldiers are no longer dying on the border.
It is also a fact that large infrastructure and investment programs are being implemented in the Republic of Armenia, mainly with American investments, which, in my opinion, are the greatest guarantee for lasting peace in the region and for Armenia’s economic development,” Papoyan noted.
