The snowfalls have improved the air quality in Yerevan over the weekend, according to Mayor Tigran Avinyan.

Speaking at a press conference, Avinyan nevertheless acknowledged that, globally, the air pollution issue is a complex matter to solve, but City Hall will do everything it can to tackle it.

“In our 2023 campaign, we said that our primary goal was to install a sufficient number of air quality monitoring devices in Yerevan. We have fully fulfilled this campaign promise,” the mayor said.

The mayor added that City Hall is working closely with experts.

Avinyan noted that the air quality issue concerns not only Yerevan but the entire Ararat Valley. “The main problem is due to our climatic conditions. Right now, the air quality is at a very good level because the northern cyclone and snowfall have completely cleaned the air,” Avinyan said.

He noted that this issue is not new. It has been discussed since the 1980s and mainly concerns the same period—November to March. “This is a very complex problem to solve. However, certain mitigations are possible. In this regard, we have a four-year air quality improvement plan, which details all the actions that Yerevan City Hall will implement at the local level to alleviate the problem,” the mayor said.
