Strict legislative regulations aimed at addressing air pollution in Armenia are expected to be introduced in the near future, Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan, a senior member of the ruling Civil Contract party, said in parliament on Friday.
The regulations will target old vehicles, the activities of construction companies, and the operation of mines, he said.
Simonyan explained that air pollution levels are high across the entire country, and in Yerevan, due to the city's topography, the pollution levels have increased several times over.
He also recalled that the Prime Minister has already instructed the creation of a working group to address the issue.
The Speaker emphasized that environmental issues had been ignored for years, and the responsibility for this lies with everyone.
"I believe we have treated this issue very lightly. Our fault, everyone's fault, lies in climate and environmental matters," Simonyan said.
According to him, in the future, legislative initiatives will be introduced to protect the environment, as well as the health of people.
