Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reacted to the latest statement by several clergymen who accused Catholicos Karekin II of covering up what they described as “the sacrilegious acts” of a senior archbishop who allegedly breached his vow of celibacy.

Pashinyan said he would like to meet with the clergymen who signed the statement.

Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister said that as a follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church, he acknowledged the statement with “humble devotion and earnestness,” while as Prime Minister, he welcomes it with “determination and resolve.”

“I believe this statement first of all shows that our Church has clergymen who are committed to fulfilling the Church’s spiritual mission. And of course, with the consent of the holy fathers, I would invite them to a meeting today so that I can better understand their positions and approaches arising from the statement,” the Prime Minister said, adding that until a possible meeting with the high-ranking clergymen who signed it, he will refrain from additional comments.
