An inmate at the Armavir Correctional Facility was shot and wounded by a bailiff when they attempted to escape from a hospital where they were taken for a health checkup, authorities reported on Thursday.

The prison guard accompanying the jailed individual initially fired a warning shot, but the inmate failed to comply, prompting the officer to fire again.

“On October 22, at approximately 19:10, an inmate from the Armavir penitentiary institution, who had been transferred to the city hospital for examination, attempted to escape by jumping out of the hospital window. The penitentiary officer, having exhausted all other means to prevent the inmate's escape, fired a single warning shot into the air. However, the detainee did not comply and, after passing through the hospital gates, continued the escape attempt. The officer then fired at the detainee’s leg, successfully stopping the escape,” the department of corrections said in a press release.

The inmate has been treated for their injuries and is in non-life-threatening condition.
The department of corrections did not release the identity of the inmate but said that they are held in pre-trial detention.
