Signed declaration implies Armenia and Azerbaijan will have no territorial claims against each other — PM

In a declaration signed in Washington on August 8, Armenia and Azerbaijan stated that they will not have territorial claims against each other, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said while answering a journalist’s question live on the air.

He also responded to a claim by the media outlet Armenia Today that Armenia has “leased Syunik to the US.”

“How could such a formulation even cross anyone’s mind? There can be no talk about leasing out territory. Syunik region has been and will continue to be part of the Republic of Armenia. I think that issue has been closed. We can also state that, with the signed declaration, we have bilaterally recorded that Armenia will not have territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan will not have territorial claims against Armenia,” Pashinyan emphasized.

Responding to a question about whether Syunik could become a springboard for an attack on Iran in case of escalating tensions between the US and Iran, Pashinyan said:

“If you follow assumptions or guesses, you can put forward absolutely any hypothesis. So what should you do to avoid getting confused and lost? We must rely on what is written, signed, and already published. After reading that text, no such questions or concerns can arise. There is no military force or component in this project at all, and there can simply be no question of it,” he concluded.
