If US fulfils its commitments, we will also reopen Strait of Hormuz – Masoud Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a televised address to the nation, said the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was conditional on the United States fulfilling its commitments, lifting sanctions and unfreezing Iran’s frozen assets, IRNA reported, citing the Iranian President.

“If the United States fulfils its commitments, lifts the blockade and sanctions, removes restrictions on oil and petrochemical products, unfreezes our assets and resumes investment, as well as halts its actions in Lebanon and compels Israel to adhere to the agreed framework, then we will also reopen the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with decisions taken within the framework of the system’s policies,” Pezeshkian said.

It should be noted that several days ago, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the establishment of a temporary navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the six months following the war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted, leading to higher oil and gas prices.

After the memorandum of understanding signed with Iran in June was violated and hostilities resumed for several days, the United States announced in July that it would resume its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iran, in turn, announced that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz and would not allow vessels to pass through unless they had agreed their passage through the waterway with Tehran in advance.

On August 24, the United States launched Operation “Economic Outcast” against Iran. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Washington will block all sources of Iranian financing during the economic pressure campaign. The United States has also warned that it could impose secondary sanctions on any countries that assist Iran.
