Peru severs diplomatic ties with Iran

Peru announced that it has decided to break diplomatic relations with Iran, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

“The Government of Peru has repeatedly expressed its condemnation and deep concern regarding the delicate situation that threatens stability in the Middle East and seriously affects international peace and security,” the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Peru said it watched with growing concern "the deterioration of democratic values in Iran," pointing to “the repression of peaceful demonstrations, the curtailment of freedom of the press, discrimination against women and girls, and the persecution of political opponents.”

It also expressed concern about disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz since March. It warned of potential repercussions for energy prices and global supply chains.

“The Government of Peru also strongly condemns Iran's incitement of violence and the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, as well as its obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose inspectors it has repeatedly denied access to nuclear facilities, hindering the verification necessary to prevent the production of nuclear weapons. Therefore, based on its long-standing commitment to peace and in accordance with its unwavering dedication to respecting international law and defending democracy, the Government of the Republic of Peru has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” it said.

Peru's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Iran does not entail the severance of consular relations, the foreign ministry added.
