Iran could invest in Armenia transit infrastructures, says official

Iran could invest in Armenia’s transit infrastructures, a foreign ministry official of the Islamic Republic has said.

Habibollah Malakoutifar, Head of the Department for the Coordination of Scientific Research and Publishing Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, made the remarks at the Iran-Armenia Relations: Transitioning Into New Regional and Global Order discussion organized by the University of Tehran and IRNA news agency.

“Corridors are a vital part of the present-day economic wars, and we must consider discussing it for creating alliances and expanding ties with countries,” he said, speaking about the economic potential of the South Caucasus.

He said Armenia could play an important role in linking Chabahar in Iran’s southeast with the Black Sea. He said Iran would require a third partner in this initiative, particularly India.

“We need a third partner in the ties with Yerevan, and in this area, especially in the matter of corridors, the best partner is India,” the official said.

The official said that Armenia needs investments in terms of development of infrastructures.

“Armenia needs investments, especially in road infrastructures, and Iran could make investments in Armenia’s transit infrastructures,” he said.

He said Armenia and Iran must utilize Armenia’s transit opportunities, emphasizing that this requires the completion of the Armenian section of the North-South corridor.
