Erdogan says he hopes for Armenia-Azerbaijan consensus on transport links

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Ankara hopes Armenia and Azerbaijan would achieve the unblocking of regional connections through consensus.

Erdogan, speaking about the unblocking of transport links between Armenia and Azerbaijan, again used the “Zangezur corridor” term, a narrative used by Azeri leader Ilham Aliyev implying an extraterritorial corridor through Armenia, something Yerevan has categorically rejected citing international law.

Speaking to reporters, Erdogan said that the opening of that road would bring benefits not only to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkiye, but also other countries in the region.

“We attach great importance to this direction in terms of geoeconomics. This direction will link geographic regions which are beyond our region’s boundaries and will boost trade. We expect it to become a symbol of reconciliation and not a source of disputes,” Erdogan was quoted by TRT Haber as saying. He said the region will thus become more prosperous.

Erdogan said he believes the regional countries will be able to solve the matter through mutual understanding.
