Prime Minister Pashinyan highlights independence of Human Rights Defender

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday attended an international conference on the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Human Rights Defender institution. 

In his speech, the PM attached importance to the institution’s activities and its independence.

Pashinyan said that for the Government of Armenia, which is guided by democracy, the “independence of the Human Rights Defender’s institution is extremely important.”

“Sometimes the government needs to receive signals from independent sources about the results and consequences of its activities, especially when it pertains to human rights, freedoms and legality, issues that are the priority in our government’s agenda, issues, which by advancing, we won the elections twice, thus the course of these commitments and reforms is highly important,” he said.

Pashinyan highlighted that there must be a standard of law and justice in the country.

President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan, Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan and Commissioner for Human Rights of Council of Europe Michael O'Flaherty also delivered remarks.
