YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 14, ARMENPRESS. General Vicar of the Armenian Patriarchate of ConstantinopleArchbishop Aram Ateshian is on a brief visit in Armenia. During his visit he will reside at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and will meet with His HolinessKarekin II, Supreme Patriarch andCatholicos of All Armenians, spokesperson of the Mother See Vahram Melikyan told “Armenpress”.
“Archbishop Aram Ateshian is a member of the Brotherhood of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Like many other clergymen, he has also arrived to Etchmiadzin. The visit pursues no specific goal”, Melikyan said.
Earlier, in July, when the German Bundestag adopted the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide, Archbishop Aram Ateshian sent a letter to Turkish president Erdogan expressing sorrow for the adoption of the resolution on behalf of the Armenian community in Turkey.
Some prominent members of the community swiftly condemned Ateshian. Turkey-based Armenian newspaper “Agos” ran an angry editorial, saying that the letter to Erdogan caused it “sorrow, anger and shame” and is an affront to the memory of the genocide victims. Local Armenians in Turkey published an open letter saying Ateshian no longer represents the community.
The spokesperson of the Mother See told that both His HolinessAram Ateshian and the Mother See have already explained the reasons for writing such a letter.
According to Vahram Melikyan, Archbishop Aram Ateshian remains a servant of the Armenian Church.
