Italian authorities have declared the highest alert level in 27 major cities due to an extreme heatwave.
According to ANSA, for the first time this year all 27 major cities monitored by Italy’s Ministry of Health under its heat warning system were placed under the highest alert, the “red level”, on August 6, as the country experiences its fourth heatwave of the year.
According to forecasts, the “oppressive heat”, with temperatures reaching 40°C in some areas, is expected to persist for at least another 10 days.
The highest alert has been declared in Rome, Bologna, Naples, Milan, Venice, Verona, Florence, Perugia, Palermo and Bari, covering all of the country’s major tourist destinations.
ANSA noted that the “red” warning, or Level 3, signifies a heat emergency involving prolonged extreme temperatures and a high overall health risk, even for young and healthy people.
