Yerevan gains new public green space as Triangular Park opens at AUA

A new public green space has opened in Yerevan, with the inauguration of Triangular Park (Karen Kakosian Gardens) at the American University of Armenia (AUA).

The land for the project was provided by the Yerevan Municipality, which granted the university the right to use the site for 25 years. The park will serve as a public green area open to the community.

Welcoming guests at the opening ceremony, AUA President Bruce Boghosian congratulated attendees on the creation of a new green space in the capital, noting that the university is marking its 35th anniversary this year and that the opening of Triangular Park is among the key events of the jubilee celebrations.

“In fact, we have planted more than 120 new and diverse trees, although it will take several seasons for them to fully mature and take on their final form. We expect that by then the park will become a beautiful shaded space that everyone can enjoy.

“Although construction has not yet been fully completed, we decided to take this opportunity to hold a preliminary opening and make the park accessible to the community as soon as possible.

“We will keep the central pathway open so that people can use it, while continuing over the coming weeks to carry out the remaining minor and final adjustments.

“This was truly a long-awaited project that became a reality thanks to dedication, perseverance and cooperation, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to making it happen,” he said.

Boghosian also thanked the Yerevan Municipality and the Arabkir Administrative District for granting the university the right to use the land for a 25-year period.

Suren Varosyan, head of Yerevan’s Arabkir Administrative District, welcomed the initiative, stressing that the city authorities place great importance on creating new public spaces and parks, and that current policies are aimed at making Yerevan a greener and more modern city.

“For many years we have lacked sufficient parks and public spaces, particularly in Arabkir, where this issue has been especially noticeable. These are spaces that should serve our residents and our children. “We highly value every such initiative, stand behind it and are ready to continue providing support within the scope of our authority, carrying out the necessary work to improve our urban environment.

“Such spaces also influence people’s mood and contribute to children’s upbringing and the formation of values. While touring the park today, I noticed how thoughtfully it has been designed for people with mobility impairments and for citizens using strollers. The park will be very easy for them to access and use,” Varosyan said.

Among those attending the event were Narek Mkrtchyan, Armenia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States, AUA President Bruce Boghosian, AUA Vice President Ashot Ghazaryan, Chairman of the AUA Board of Trustees Zaven Akian, as well as members of the board and the wider university community.
