Iran says it has full control over Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the Iranian navy maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to fire on any ship attempting to pass through it, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

Fars quoted a senior IRGC official as saying that the Strait of Hormuz is under the “full control” of the Iranian navy.

Earlier, on March 3, a commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said the Strait of Hormuz is closed and warned that any vessel attempting to pass through would be attacked.

The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Iran and Oman, is one of the most strategically important oil passages in the world, carrying about 20% of the global oil supply.

The closure was triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump said U.S. naval forces are ready to escort oil tankers passing through the strait.
