German politicians congratulate Democrats on US congressional election victory

Several senior German politicians have congratulated the US Democratic Party after preliminary midterm election results showed it had defeated President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans and secured majorities in both chambers of Congress, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to the report, Metin Hakverdi, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coordinator for transatlantic cooperation, said he expected the US midterm election results to have a significant impact on political relations between Berlin and Washington.

“America has chosen change,” he told the DPA news agency in an interview.

The official stressed, however, that President Trump would continue to play the decisive role in foreign policy and that Germany would maintain ties with both parties.

“In particular, we must not restrict our contacts to individual political camps,” he added.

Hakverdi also highlighted the historical significance of a Native American woman being elected governor of New Mexico and a black woman being elected governor of Georgia, both for the first time.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also congratulated the Democrats, describing their victory as “historic”. He stressed that the White House administration would remain unchanged and that Berlin would continue to cooperate with it.
