Armenia is discussing with Russia the possibility of sending cargo shipments via Azerbaijan, after it began receiving goods along the same route.
Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk spoke about the shipments in an interview with the Russia-24 channel.
“This concerns ensuring the return cargo transportation from Armenia to Russia through Azerbaijani territory. These are developments that recently would have seemed unlikely,” Overchuk noted, recalling that Russia has already exported grain to Armenia via railway through Azerbaijani and Georgian territory.
Overchuk also stated that, in addition to grain, Russia plans to export fertilizers to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory.
“A very important event recently took place: we had the first Russian grain-carrying train enter Armenia via Azerbaijani and Georgian territory. In other words, for the first time in more than 30 years, and since the independence of Armenia and Azerbaijan, a grain-carrying train traveled this route. It carried Russian grain. After that, there was a delivery of Kazakh grain. We are also discussing the possibility of using this route for other types of cargo, including fertilizers,” Overchuk said.
He also recalled that a train carrying Azerbaijani petroleum products arrived in Armenia a few days ago via Georgia.
