Spanish Member of Parliament Jon Iñarritu has described the dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan as positive, stating that negotiations and agreements are the foundation of peace and stability, provided they are conducted with goodwill and mutual respect.
The Spanish legislator expressed this view in an interview with Armenpress, commenting on the peace agreement signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8 and its significance for establishing peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
Iñarritu noted that dialogue, negotiations and agreements are the basis for lasting peace as long as they are carried out in goodwill. He stressed that the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict is deeply rooted and extends far beyond the borders of the two states.
He pointed out that the Armenian Genocide, the massacres of the 1990s in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, the wars over Nagorno-Karabakh and recent acts of ethnic cleansing are all part of a long and painful historical wound.
The MP also drew attention to Azerbaijan’s continued promotion of what he described as a fake narrative of the so-called “Western Azerbaijan,” which, according to him, conceals territorial ambitions toward the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan is investing significant resources in distorting reality by advancing this narrative, which in fact refers to Armenia’s sovereign territory.
At the same time, Iñarritu described the fact that both countries remain engaged in dialogue as a positive development and expressed hope that these steps could lead in the right direction. However, he added that in the long term, a broader and more coordinated international effort would be required to achieve reconciliation.
Referring to the unblocking of communication routes in the South Caucasus envisaged by the Washington agreements, the Spanish MP said that freedom of transport and movement in such a strategic region could be highly beneficial. He noted that it could boost trade, regional cooperation and stability by increasing interconnectedness, while stressing that this must be done with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each state and under terms agreed by the states themselves.
Iñarritu stated that for any agreement to be effective in the long term, it must be based on equality, mutual respect and genuine consent, rather than threats or unilateral demands.
Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace agreement in Washington on August 8, after which Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that peace had been established between the two countries.
On the same day, Prime Minister Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump and President Aliyev signed a declaration in Washington. The fourth point of which, in particular, stipulates:
"The Republic of Armenia will work with the United States of America and mutually determined third parties, to set forth a framework for the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) connectivity project in the territory of the Republic of Armenia. We confirm our determination to pursue efforts in good faith to achieve this goal in the most expeditious manner."
Later, Prime Minister Pashinyan told the National Assembly that construction of the “Trump Route” is planned to begin in the second half of 2026. He said that all details should be finalized by the end of this year, agreements reached in the first half of 2026, and construction launched in the second half of that year.
