Parliament OKs preventative government intervention in energy management

1 minute read

Parliament adopted at first reading the legislative amendments seeking to authorize preventative government intervention in the energy sector. The bill was drafted by ruling party MPs.

60 MPs voted in favor while 30 voted against.

The current legislation allows to address only the violations by energy company administration that have already taken place, but there are no tools to prevent the risks in early stages, the ruling party legislators argued.

The amendments seek to give the government the tools to intervene in emergency scenarios to prevent risks.

Armenian authorities plan to assume control of the country’s electric utility (ENA), currently owned by billionaire tycoon Samvel Karapetyan’s Tashir Group, for what they describe as mismanagement which had nearly triggered an energy crisis in the country.

ENA has denied the accusations.
