Investigators enter Armenian Church’s Diocese of Shirak headquarters - Updated

Law enforcement agencies are carrying out investigative actions at the diocesan headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church’s Diocese of Shirak.

Law enforcement officers entered the prelacy building early this morning and locked the doors, an Armenpress correspondent reported from the scene. 

The Diocese of Shirak is headed by Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, who is under investigation for allegedly advocating the overthrow of the government.

A group of Ajapahyan’s supporters has gathered outside the diocesan headquarters. One of the supporters was detained by the police.

Ajapahyan’s lawyer Tamara Yanjoyan described the investigative actions as illegal. She said police obstructed her from entering the prelacy.
