Russian mediation in Azerbaijan talks unlikely, says Armenian Speaker of Parliament

Armenian Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan says a Russian mediation in the talks with Azerbaijan is unlikely.

Simonyan was asked at a press briefing on Tuesday whether Armenia would consider accepting Russian mediation offers.

“I find it less likely, but we are ready to discuss any proposal, if made specifically,” Simonyan said.

“However, the experience of the past has left bad memories. After all, there are still unresolved issues, for example, Russia’s position both within the CSTO and the Armenia-Russia interstate treaty regarding the Azerbaijani troops who invaded Armenia. We expected at least Russia taking some action. But we didn’t even get a political assessment. Instead, they reacted by saying that the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is not demarcated. Meaning, they simply found a pretext to avoid the issue,” Simonyan added.

After these developments, Simonyan said, Armenia is skeptical about Russia’s mediation offer.

“Not to mention the example of the November 9 trilateral statement, when Russian peacekeepers were stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh and were supposed to protect the Armenian people, where are the Russian peacekeepers now, and where are the Armenian people of Nagorno-Karabakh,” the Speaker said.
