Government designates national reserve status to 4 historical monuments

YEREVAN, AUGUST 29, ARMENPRESS. The Cabinet on Thursday approved adding 4 historical-cultural monuments to the list of national reserves.

The ancient Yereruyk church, the Old Khndzoresk historic village known for its caves, the Berdkunk fortress in Gegharkunik Province and the Cross-stones of Noratus village will be designated as national reserves for protection and conservation.

“The necessary infrastructures are absent near those monuments. Many people don’t even visit these monuments because they don’t have any information about them,” Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan said at the Cabinet meeting.

Designating the monuments as protected areas will enable authorities to create infrastructure, improve the area and promote visitations through tours and guides.

Prime Minister Pashinyan mentioned that multiple historical-cultural monuments, which are part of historic heritage and identity of the Armenian nation, across the country are abandoned and in need for conservation.

“We have a problem. A huge part of these historical-cultural monuments have been abandoned for decades, even centuries…..We need to at least preserve and restore these monuments,” he said.
