Armenia plans to develop intelligence community by launching new Foreign Intelligence Service

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 20, ARMENPRESS. Lawmakers are debating the government-authored bill on creating a Foreign Intelligence Service.

The bill is being presented by Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan during an extraordinary session of parliament.

The Foreign Intelligence Service - a civilian agency - will report to the Prime Minister.

Grigoryan said they plan to form an intelligence community in Armenia by the creation of the Foreign Intelligence Service, the the latter will play an important role in the community.

“Given the fact that similar divisions exist in the Defense Ministry and the National Security Service, where service is considered military service, a political decision exists to create a new type of state service which will not constitute military service. With this, the new service will have the chance to have broader possibilities and inolve specialists,” Grigoryan said.

The Director of Foreign Intelligence Service will ex-officio be a member of the Security Council.
