YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 28, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/ Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini on February 28.
As “Armenpress” was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office, at the beginning of the meeting the President of the Republic noted with satisfaction that the this meeting with Mrs. Mogherini takes place at a decisive period in Armenian-EU relations, when a day before it was jointly announced with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk about the completion of the talks on the new framework agreement.
Serzh Sargsyan considered it indicative that still a year ago they discussed the negotiation process over the new Armenia-EU legal document in a meeting in Yerevan the launch of which Mrs. Mogherini had herself heralded. President Sargsyan assessed that achievement as the outcome of reciprocal commitments and devoted efforts of the teams of both sides.
The interlocutors discussed a broad scope of issues of Armenia-European Union relations, further development and strengthening of partnership. The President underlined that indeed, the joint achievements of the last two years should be referred to with satisfaction.
The meeting of the President of Armenia with the EU High Representative, like the meetings with the heads of other EU establishments in the previous day, addressed the reform implementation process in different areas of Armenia, the large-scale works following the Constitutional changes aimed at further development and strengthening of democratic institutions in the country, as well as the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Answering the question of Mrs. Mogherini, President Sargsyan introduced the preparatory works of the parliamentary elections and thanked for the EU’s assistance to organizing the elections.
The interlocutors discussed Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process, existing problems and challenges. The President presented in detail the un-constructive stance of Azerbaijan and the regular provocations by that country along the contact line with Nagorno Karabakh and the state border with Armenia, the refusal to implement the Vienna and St. Petersburg agreements, which, according to him, put under risk the years of efforts of the international community and the negotiation process aimed at peaceful settlement of the conflict.
