President Sargsyan meets EPP President Joseph Daul in Belgium

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan’s working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium has kicked off, press service of the President’s Office told “Armenpress”.

President Sargsyan on February 27 had a meeting with President of the European People’s Party (EPP) Joseph Daul.

The sides talked about the development prospect of Armenia-EU relations, the process of ongoing comprehensive reforms in Armenia, including the works carried out towards transferring to a new governance system after the Constitutional changes, further development and strengthening of democratic institutions, the preparation of the parliamentary election to be held in April.

Serzh Sargsyan and Joseph Daul discussed Armenia’s mutual cooperation with the EPP partners in the international platforms, as well as issues related to common problems and challenges, exchanged views on strengthening the inter-party ties.

President Sargsyan said during his visit to Belgium meetings and discussions with full and meaningful agenda are scheduled with the EU leadership, and attached a great role to the EPP, as one of the most influential political force of Europe, on deepening Armenia’s relations with the EU.

Serzh Sargsyan attached great importance to continuous deepening of the RPA’s cooperation with EPP and expressed gratitude for the constant readiness to assist Armenia and the RPA and for the practical support. In this context, importance was attached also to the cooperation with the EPP in various inter-parliamentary platforms directed towards the guarantee of protection of human rights and freedoms, social, humanitarian, cultural cooperation.

The sides also discussed the Nagorno Karabakh issue. Serzh Sargsyan presented the stances of the Armenian side over the conflict settlement, the situation in Nagorno Karabakh-Azerbaijan line of contact, information on Azerbaijan’s regular ceasefire violations, provocative actions and escalation of the situation.

Stating that the Nagorno Karabkah conflict remains a serious threat for the regional and the European security, President Serzh Sargsyan stated that Armenia, as well as the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairing countries do not see alternative to peaceful settlement, and contrary to Azerbaijan, Armenia doesn’t want our region to once again enter into the nightmare of war.

The Armenian President reaffirmed that Armenia will make efforts together with the OSCE Minsk Group to reach exclusively the peaceful settlement of the conflict, which, according to him, is also the collective perception of the international community.

At the meeting President Sargsyan thanked the EPP President for the invitation to take part in the EPP political forum in Malta in late March.
