Armenia doesn’t need new Russian military bases – says President Sargsyan

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS. Except from the Russian military base in Gyumri, there is no need to built new Russian military bases in Armenia, President Serzh Sargsyan told “Rossiya Segodnya” for an interview to “Sputnik Armenia”.

“I think, there is no need, since the military base has all opportunities for including the required elements. Thus, I think that one military base is enough in small Armenia, we just need to fill it with military capacity”, the President said.

The 102nd Russian military base is deployed in Gyumri’s north which carries out a military duty within the frames of the CIS joint Air Defense System.

On August 20, 2010 Armenia and Russia extended the term of agreement over the base deployment until 2044.

It is expected to expand the geographical and strategic areas of responsibility of the military base.
