MP Zohrabyan expects Archbishop Ateshyan to be defrocked

YEREVAN, JUNE 8, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Member of Parliament Naira Zohrabyan says she expects Catholicos Garegin II to raise the issue of defrocking Istanbul’s Patriarchal Vicar Aram Archbishop Ateshyan for his recent letter to Turkish President Erdogan.

Zohrabyan said Ateshyan’s letter is state treason.

“This is state treason committed by a high ranking clergy”, she said.

On June 7 “Agos” published an open letter to Ateshyan, criticizing and condemning his letter to the Turkish President.

Ateshyan addressed a letter to the Turkish President, stating as if the Armenian community of Turkey learned with great pain about Germany’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
