The UK recognizes and denies the Armenian Genocide at the same time: ANC representative

YEREVAN, 22 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. Over the past three to four years, progress has been made in discussing the Armenian Genocide and achieving recognition in Great Britain. This is what Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of the United Kingdom Sevan Artin said in response to “Armenpress”’s question. “Whereas before they wouldn’t agree to sit around a table with us, now they are ready to consult. In the case of the UK, the peculiarity is that the UK is historically close to Turkey. Besides that, the Armenian community of the UK is smaller than the communities in other countries. But we have found another way. Leading human rights expert Geoffrey Robertson has prepared a book devoted to the Armenia Genocide and the UK’s position,” Sevan Artin said.

Based on the law on freedom of information, Geoffrey Robertson has appealed and obtained one of the documents of the UK Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed to Members of Parliament. “The document reads as follows: ‘We know that our position is wrong, but since we have economic and geopolitical motives, we can’t change our position’. For me, that text means recognition and denial of genocide at the same time. This is a very typical UK policy,” the ANC representative stated.

As far as Scotland’s adoption of an Armenian Genocide Resolution is concerned, Sevan Artin mentioned that efforts are being made, but there is no news yet.
