Goal of new EP Resolution is to observe the Armenian Genocide issuefrom the political perspective: EP Deputy

YEREVAN, 15 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. The goal of the draft of the Resolution that is currently being discussed in the European Parliament is to observe the issue of the Armenian Genocide from the political perspective. As “Armenpress” reports, this is what the Italian Deputy of the European Parliament Panselino Clopie informed during the discussion on the draft of the Armenian Genocide Resolution in the European Parliament.

“Turkey’s lack of ability to acknowledge the past is making the road to Europe hard for the country. Turkey has to think about this. Confronting the past is necessary in order to heal the wounds of the past and be able to move forward. Entering a new phase of democracy is in Turkey’s hands,” the Deputy said.

“The first act of genocide is annihilation of people, and the final act is the denial of that genocide. In the course of one year, 1.5 million men, women and children were killed in the Ottoman Empire just because they were Armenian. This is genocide, and nobody in this chamber can deny it. Even the Ottoman court mentioned that, and Turkish historians also refer to it as genocide,” Italy’s Deputy Laura Agea said in the European Parliament.

French Deputy Édouard Ferrand also expressed his solidarity with all Armenians around the world and mentioned that France has never stopped defending recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Touching upon the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, Latvian parliamentarian of the European Parliament Sandra Kalniete urged Turkish and Armenian figures and intellectuals to make efforts for reconciliation by accepting this session as a basis. “We have to acknowledge the history. We have to acknowledge the fact that humans were slaughtered. What happened in 1915 was genocide, the victims of which were the Armenians. A hundred years have passed since then, but it continues to hinder Armenian-Turkish relations,” the Latvian Deputy emphasized.
