Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan chaired a meeting of the interagency commission on issues concerning persons with disabilities on 3 November, attended by representatives of the legislative and executive branches and non-governmental organisations.
According to a statement published on the Armenian government’s official website, the meeting addressed a range of issues concerning the creation of an accessible and inclusive environment for persons with disabilities.
In this context, participants highlighted the importance of introducing new urban planning standards aligned with international requirements. These allow existing buildings, structures and surrounding areas to be brought into compliance with accessibility requirements while ensuring that high accessibility standards are applied when designing and constructing new facilities.
Commission members also discussed legal and practical barriers affecting freedom of movement, independent living and the full exercise of rights by persons with disabilities.
Following the discussions, the Deputy Prime Minister issued instructions to find systemic solutions to the issues raised, address existing challenges and take concrete steps to overcome them.
