Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has highlighted the need for major investments to improve what he described as a “widely degraded” water supply system across the country.
His comments came after yet another case of water contamination that led to gastrointestinal infections in the town of Byureghavan.
“The answers must be properly substantiated, and Veolia Jur and the other responsible bodies must draw conclusions,” he said in response to a question from Armenpress, referring to the water supply operator.
“The necessary decisions must be made. The issue is not only about investment. We sometimes think that by installing pipes, we have solved the problem, but if the system is not properly maintained on a daily basis, we will face the same problems again. Serious investments are needed for routine maintenance. Moreover, risk management is also factored into tariffs. We must confront the problem and be guided by established standards. All processes must be included in the tariff structure so that we can ensure the long-term delivery of high-quality daily water supply services,” the Prime Minister said at a press briefing.
