Greek Language and Music: A Living Tradition of More Than Three Millennia event to be held in Armenia

The Embassy of Greece in Armenia, with the support of the National Library of Armenia, is organizing on 9 February 2026 the event “Greek Language and Music: A living tradition of more than three millennia”, as part of the annual celebration of World Greek Language Day, inviting the public on a unique journey through time and culture.

The keynote speaker of the event will be the distinguished Professor of Ethnomusicology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Mr. Lambros Liavas. Through speech and music, the event seeks the enduring and inseparable relationship between the Greek language and musical expression-a relationship that spans more than three millennia, conveying memories, emotions, and values.

The Greek language, one of the oldest recorded living languages, continues to inspire people around the world, serving as a bridge between cultures. In Armenia, the teaching of Greek and the growing interest among students reaffirm its lasting role as a bearer of values, knowledge, and cultural continuity, highlighting the vitality and appeal of a culture that remains alive.

The programme also includes recitations of Greek folk poetry by students of the Greek language, as well as performances of traditional musical pieces from Greece, bringing to life the timeless bond between word and music.

World Greek Language Day was established in 2017 and was officially proclaimed on 12 November 2025 by the General Conference of UNESCO, during its 43rd  session, as an international recognition of the enduring value of the Greek language and its contribution to knowledge, education, and global cultural heritage.

The event is held in collaboration with the Union of Greek Communities of Armenia and its Greek Language and Culture Department, the Greek Social Organization “Ponti of Yerevan” and its Greek Language and Culture Department “Logos Hellenikos of Yerevan”, the Center for Greek Language and Culture at V. Brusov State University, the Research Center-Library of Greek Studies at Yerevan State University, the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Academy, the Military and Sports College “Monte Melkonyan”, the Armenian-Greek College of Tourism, Services and Food Industry, the Lycée international français “Anatole France” and the “MSU Branch Yeritsyan Gymnasium” where the Greek language is taught, as well as the family musical ensemble “Kharitoni”.
