Armenia does not intend to withdraw from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan, a senior member of the ruling Civil Contract party, told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during their meeting in Moscow on February 5.
He was responding to Lavrov’s remarks that Armenia’s EAEU membership is incompatible with EU accession. The Russian FM made these comments in light of the Armenian parliament’s adoption of the EU bill, which calls on the government to initiate the accession process.
“We do not believe that we should leave the Eurasian Economic Union. We think we can find a solution together that will be beneficial for both sides,” Simonyan said.
The Speaker also addressed Armenia’s decision to freeze its membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), stressing that Yerevan has still not received answers to its questions for the bloc.
“We have questions for which we have still not received answers from the CSTO. They have been raised repeatedly. I do not wish to repeat them; you, our partners, are well aware of them,” the Armenian Speaker of Parliament said.
