Armenian economy to undergo fundamental changes as blockade gradually lifts, says PM following Azerbaijan’s transit greenlight

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Thursday that Azerbaijan’s recent decision to lift restriction on transit of goods means that Armenia is gradually overcoming the blockade.

He said that fundamental changes would soon happen in the Armenian economy.

“Fundamental changes will soon take place in the structure of our economy. For the past two days, there has been discussion about Azerbaijan’s announcement to lift restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia. This is a very important decision that demonstrates that the Washington declaration and the agreements reached are not merely declarations, as some have tried to portray. In other words, these are declarations that have produced concrete results,” the PM said at the Cabinet meeting.

Anything negative gets a lot of spotlights while the positive developments are often overlooked, he said.

“When the sound of gunfire is heard in a village, the next day there are intense discussions all over social media. But when there is no gunfire heard in a village for a long time, no one talks about it. Some people say, ‘Armenia is being destroyed.’ Those people simply do not know Armenia. Armenia has institutions, organizations, and political philosophies that operate based on the premise of Armenia’s destruction. In other words, their form of relations and their activity revolve around a ‘collapsing Armenia.’ If Armenia is not being destroyed, then they have no field of activity. Therefore, to at least maintain some field of activity, they need to substantiate that Armenia is being destroyed. But even that is no longer possible, as yesterday’s empty opposition seats in the parliamentary hall showed,” the PM said, referring to the October 22 parliamentary session where opposition MPs did not participate in the Q&A with Cabinet members.

The Prime Minister added that there should be no impression that problems do not exist at all or that the Government does not see these problems. He emphasized that no one knows Armenia’s problems as well as the Government does.
