During his working visit to Crete, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, met with Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokerinos.
The meeting focused on the long-standing presence and active role of the Armenian community in Heraklion since the Byzantine times, as well as the traditional friendly ties between the Armenian and Greek peoples.
The sides highlighted that the Armenian community continues to contribute significantly to the socio-economic life of both Heraklion and Greece as a whole.
At the request of Mayor Kalokerinos, Ambassador Mkrtchyan presented regional developments and the recent agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington. He emphasized the importance of these agreements for the full normalization of relations between the two countries, based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders, in line with the 1991 Almaty Declaration.
The Mayor noted that he follows developments in Armenia and the region closely, underlining that " it is very important for Armenia to establish good relations and peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries."
The meeting also touched on potential directions for cooperation between the Municipality of Heraklion and Armenian cities.
