UK Minister of State for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories visits Armenian Genocide Memorial

A delegation led by the Minister of State for Europe, North America and the Overseas Territories of the United Kingdom, the Rt Hon Stephen Doughty on Tuesday visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial, accompanied by the UK Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Armenia, John Gallagher, according to the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute.

The guests were accompanied by Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Director Edita Gzoyan.

"The director of the AGMI presented the history of the creation of the memorial complex.

She also referred to the three khachkars erected in memory of the Armenians who died in the massacres organized by the Azerbaijani government in the cities of Sumgait, Kirovabad (Gandzak) and Baku at the end of the last century in the territory and the stories of the five freedom fighters buried in front of Hushapat (Memorial Wall) during the Artsakh war.

Mr. Stephen Doughty laid a wreath at the memorial commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide, then the guests placed flowers near the eternal fire and observed a minute of silence in memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Ms Gzoyan also guided the visitors to the Memory Wall presenting its history. Behind the wall, in special niches, are small urns filled with soil taken from the graves of various foreign public figures, political leaders, intellectuals, and missionaries who raised their voices in protest against the mass massacres and genocide of Armenians carried out by the Ottoman government in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The guests listened with great interest to the pro-Armenian activities of British James Bryce,’’ the statement reads.

According to the source, in gratitude for the visit, AGMI Director Edita Gzoyan presented Stephen Doughty with books about the Armenian Genocide.
