Radioactive pollution detected at Iran's Natanz facility, no threat – IAEA chief

Above-norm radiation levels have been detected within the protective perimeter at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility after the Israeli airstrikes, but it doesn’t pose a threat to the population or the environment, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi has said.

"In Natanz that sustained the most, I would say, serious damage, there has been some contamination, but it is contained inside the perimeter of the facility. So, there is no immediate danger for the population," he told Bloomberg TV in an interview.

Grossi warned that the risk of radioactive contamination could grow if the hostilities escalate.

The IAEA chief said he informed both Iran and Israel, as well as the US and Persian Gulf countries, that strikes against nuclear sites are “unacceptable and may entail irreversible consequences.”

IAEA experts remain in Iran and will begin inspections as soon as possible, he added.
